At six I didn’t sleep for over a week
Fear of being damned for a kiss on the cheek
Words my pastor were constant to preach
Ah yes, the power of speech
Working for my degree made my nerves fry
Kept hearing the words “It never fails to try”
Encouragement is a subject not required to teach
Ah yes, the power of speech
Her beauty takes my breath away
“Nice boobs” was all I thought to say
Her slap corrected that social breach
Ah yes, the power of speech
Two years later I have a different surprise
The diamond of intent bringing tears to her eyes
“Yes” brings in a star once out of my reach
Ah yes, the power of speech

Love the theme.. not easy to pay compliments or giving encouragements… but at the end when give the moment the simple yet make all the difference… 🙂
Words indeed do have power. No matter how young or old we are, they can cut through us like a katana. I liked very much the rhythm of this and rhymes as well as the words put together.
Words when chosen correctly have the power to set things straight 😀
Your poem is a great reminder that words are indeed powerful! The ending brought a smile to my face.
Oh, speech does have power, doesn’t it? I guess somewhere along the line one has to learn NOT to say “nice boobs.” LOL. Enjoyed the last stanza. The word “yes” sometimes is the most powerful word of all! No more words needed. Smiles.
yeah…power of speech indeed…Word is omnipotent….
the Zen notion that thought is inert in the total scheme of things, that we must speak those thoughts, verbalize them so that the sound of it, like radio waves can travel to the universe, has always struck me as awesome. So I recite, perform, record all my poems, demand conversation while around the taciturn, conduct family discussions about life, encourage all forms of talk at the dinner table. See what your poem did to me?
To speak or not to speak… I’ve spent most of my life watching my tongue and have decided it has mostly wasted a lot of time.

Simply marvelous.
Love the turn this took at the end, how the power of speech was demonstrated as both for negative and positive effect 🙂
The Power of Speech and Faith: Speak to The Mountain
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he says [Mark 11:23, Matthew 21:21, Matthew 17:20, Luke 17:6].
